Adele's newly released single "Hello" is on the fast track to reaching No. 1 next week, thus likely ending Drake's hopes of nabbing his first chart-topper in the U.S.
Drake's "Hotline Bling" was unable to hit No. 1 on the Hot 100 chart, despite the viral release of the song's video last week. But as Billboard points out, the clip was released exclusively on Apple Music, which does not currently report video streaming data to Nielsen Music, as YouTube and Vevo do.
The rapper reportedly has an exclusive deal with Apple and may have been contracted to release his video with the streaming platform in advance of Youtube. His rap, however, elected not to comment on the existence of such a deal.
Perhaps not coincidentally, "Hotline" was released Monday on Vevo, but its window may have already passed, considering "Hello" (which released last Friday) already passed 500,000 downloads over the weekend and is aiming for a record-breaking week in sales alone, in addition to streaming and radio airplay.
With numbers like that, it's difficult to imagine "Hotline Bling" or even this week's No. 1, The Weeknd's "The Hills," stopping "Hello" from clinching the top spot next Monday (Nov. 2).
