Cher revealed Saturday she is donating thousands of bottles of water to the residents of Flint, Michigan, who are currently without safe drinking water.
"This is a tragedy of staggering proportion and shocking that it's happening in the middle of our country," the singer said in a statement to The Associated Press.
Flint residents had been consuming toxic water since April 2014, when the city switched water sources to save money. And until recently, officials assured locals it was safe for drinking and bathing.
President Obama today declared a state of emergency in the city as allegations increase, suggesting city leaders ignored residents' complaints about the taste and smell of the water.

There is also a federal investigation into whether there is a link to the water crisis and an increase in Legionnaires' disease locally, including seven deaths. And new reports show Flint officials may have also violated federal law while repeatedly denouncing third-party and medical tests revealing water contamination.
Water company Icelandic Glacial has agreed to match Cher's donation, with an estimated 181,440 expected to arrive in Flint this week.
