A newly released trailer for the upcoming fifth season of House of Cards suggests the political thriller is embracing the absurdity of America's current political culture—and then taking it up several notches.

In the new clip, Frank and Claire Underwood seem to be done playing nice. And they're clawing for permanent power—in 2016, 2020, 2024, 2028, 2032 and so on.

"The American people don’t know what’s best for them. I do,” Kevin Spacey’s Frank Underwood declares in a chilling voiceover. "They’re like little children, Claire. We have to hold their sticky fingers and wipe their filthy mouths, teach them right from wrong, tell them what to think and how to feel and what to want. They even need help writing their wildest dreams, crafting their worst fears. Lucky for them, they have me. They have you."

"One nation, Underwood," he finally asserts onscreen, either proving to be much more terrifying than Donald Trump—or simply foreshadowing the road ahead.

House of Cards returns to Netflix on the not-binge-friendly date of May 30 and the new trailer can be seen below.
