Jay-Z's Tidal-Exclusive Album Is Already Platinum

Jay-Z's new album 4:44, which was released just five days ago, has been certified platinum.

The Recording Industry Association of America announced Wednesday Jay's new LP had moved at least 1 million units, making it the rapper's 13th platinum achievement, more than any other hip-hop artist. He also has four platinum collaborative albums, including his and Kanye West's Watch the Throne.

“Props to Jay, he’s done it again! Another Platinum album adds to an already iconic career,” RIAA CEO Cary Sherman said in a statement released today.

Because 4:44 is currently only available on Tidal, the quick certification is definitely raising eyebrows. But it's possible Jay is benefitting from Tidal's arrangement with co-owner Sprint to drive subscribers to the streaming service to hear the album.

Variety cited a source with knowledge of the certification details, pointing out that sales count "if purchased directly by the customer," but a company can also "purchase the album or song and offer it to fans, who must take affirmative steps to acquire the album or song." In this case, "fans participated, took action and downloaded Jay-Z’s album offered by Sprint."

It wouldn't be the first of Jay's albums to take an unconventional road to high sales, as his previous record, 2013's Magna Carta Holy Grail, drew criticism because Samsung advance-purchased 1 million downloads to give away to consumers.

It's also worth noting, since February 2016, the RIAA has followed a formula similar to Nielsen Music's sales and streaming rankings, which counts 1,500 on-demand audio or video streams as 10 track sales, the equivalent of one traditional album sale.

4:44 is expected to be released on Spotify and Apple Music this Friday, as is the visual companion for the record.
