This Wednesday's installment of ABC's Modern Family will include the first openly transgender child actor, the network has confirmed.

The episode, titled "A Steretypical Day," will see Cam (Eric Stonestreet) and Mitchell's (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) daughter Lily (Aubrey Anderson-Emmons) inviting her classmate and transgender friend Tom over to play. While they're immediately proud to have raised such an open-minded child, the playdate doesn't go as planned and it results in a "teachable moment."

Tom will played by 8-year-old transgender actor Jackson Millarker, marking a pivotal television moment for the veteran comedy, which is currently in its eighth season.

When accepting his Emmy Award for Best Actor in a Comedy earlier this month, Jeffrey Tambor—who plays a transgender woman on Transparent—made a plea to see more transgender actors onscreen, explaining he "would not be unhappy if I were the last cisgender male to play a female transgender on television."
