The Killers are officially back in the studio working on their long-awaited fifth album, their followup to 2012's Battle Born.

According to drummer Ronnie Vannucci Jr., the band was starting recording sessions on Friday (Sept. 9). “We go into the studio two days from now," he said, speaking with DIY on Wednesday, adding: "We'll see what happens. We've been working with different people and seeing how it feels, and we're starting to work with another person now. I don't know if we wanna reveal who that is."

Whatever their recording plans, they'll be taking a break later this month when they headline Music Midtown in Atlanta on Sept. 18.

The Brandon Flowers-fronted rockers have spent much of the past year writing new material and even debuted a new song during a show in Ontario. The singer himself has said he hoped to give fans new music "at the end of 2016 maybe."

Flowers told Variance last year the band seemed more "anxious" and "excited" than previous album cycles to get back to work. "I still want to write a masterpiece,” he said, noting: "I truly feel like it’s still in me and in the band to do our best work. I feel like our best days are ahead and our best music has yet to be heard.”
