With the bittersweet final season premiere of AMC's Mad Men on Sunday, the ratings were nothing to smile about.

The episode brought in 2.3 million viewers, down 30 percent from the show's season 6 premiere (3.4 million) last year. The numbers were low enough to rank as the series' lowest premiere since its second year in 2008.

AMC has previously revealed it will split the final 14-episode season into two arcs, with the second half arriving in spring 2015 (a la Breaking Bad).

It was a busy night on cable though. But HBO's Game of Thrones still managed to maintain huge ratings with 6.3 million viewers on a network that reaches far fewer households than AMC. It's also worth noting Mad Men has never averaged more than 2-3 million viewers per season.
