HBO to Launch Stand-Alone Streaming Service in 2015

HBO appears ready to shake things up, as the company announced Wednesday morning it will launch a stand-alone, non-cable subscription service beginning in 2015.

Chairman/CEO Richard Plepler told investors at a meeting on Wednesday the company has seen "significant growth opportunities inside the pay-TV universe," but explained there are currently 10 million "broadband-only homes," which is on the incline.

“That is a large and growing opportunity that should no longer be left untapped. It is time to remove all barriers to those who want HBO," Plepler said. “We will work with our current partners. And, we will explore models with new partners. All in, there are 80 million homes that do not have HBO and we will use all means at our disposal to go after them.”

The news should be quite welcome, especially after the past year, when shows like Game of Thrones and True Detective consistently crashed the HBO GO app, a sign that many subscribers were sharing passwords with non-paying friends who still wanted access to the net's content.
