Sony Hackers Warn of '11th of September' Attacks on Movie Theaters Showing 'The Interview'

(Updated)

In the latest and perhaps most serious development in the recent Sony Entertainment hacks, the culprits have warned of a September 11-like attack on movie theaters showing the controversial film, The Interview.

Starring Seth Rogen and James Franco, the film about two journalists on a mission to assassinate North Korea's leader Kim Jong-un is due in theaters on Christmas, but it's set to premiere in major U.S. cities beginning this week.

North Korea has celebrated the hacks, which have included executive salary information, film budgets, script details, revelations of forthcoming projects, employee medical records, social security numbers and numerous Sony-related emails.

Update: Rogen and Franco have canceled their upcoming press appearances. Reps for both actors didn't immediately return our requests for comment. A The Tonight Show rep, however, tells us the pair's joint appearance on Wednesday has been scrapped.

Update (Dec. 16, 9:40 p.m. EST): Carmike Cinemas, which has 278 theaters in 41 states, is reportedly opting not to show the film. Sony said earlier Tuesday theaters are welcome to opt out of screening it.

The film's New York premiere on Thursday has also been canceled, a studio spokesperson has confirmed.

In addition to a “Christmas gift” of other files, the hackers released this latest warning seen below:

We will clearly show it to you at the very time and places “The Interview” be shown, including the premiere, how bitter fate those who seek fun in terror should be doomed to.
Soon all the world will see what an awful movie Sony Pictures Entertainment has made.
The world will be full of fear.
Remember the 11th of September 2001.
We recommend you to keep yourself distant from the places at that time.
(If your house is nearby, you’d better leave.)
Whatever comes in the coming days is called by the greed of Sony Pictures Entertainment.
All the world will denounce the SONY.
